i'm all ears
The I’M ALL EARS is a spatial interactive device that reflects the digital society in a critical way, which technology companies are collecting and tracking digital data of user anytime anywhere. The interactive device addresses the "listening" behavior, and the matrix of ears rotating with the audience's voice to create an invisible sense of pressure. Rows of flickering exchange boxes just like a data black box, use an abstract way to represent the tech companies stay in the backstage tanscripting and analyzing users’ data. Headphones as the medium, expose the audience to eavesdropping scenario, thus enhancing the perception of what tech companies are doing to provoke critical thinking.
Eavesdropping: An Intimate History
Who hasn’t eavesdropped in a theater or restaurant? Even animals do it. In “Eavesdropping,” John L. Locke explores this behavior from historical voyeurism to social media, revealing its biological roots and impact. Eavesdropping helps us understand others but also involves cheating, espionage, and secret monitoring. In our age of surveillance, this is eye-opening.
Background Research
Large shares of adults are convinced they benefit from “Smart” devices and data gathering. Millions of us now have virtual assistants, in our homes and our pockets. Even children’s toys are getting smart. Data-driven products and services are often marketed with the potential to save users time and money or even lead to better health and well-being. But when we talk to them, who is listening?
Smart devices are cool and convenient, but they also erode your privacy. Has this ever happened to you? You’re talking to someone about buying something, maybe you need a new pair of shoes. And then all of a sudden, you start getting ads on your phone for new shoes. You’re pretty certain that you never searched for shoes, so what’s going on?
